Dr. Merfeld is a graduate of the University of Iowa College of Dentistry, one of the top dental programs in the world.  He received his undergraduate degree in cellular biology from the University of Kansas, and continued his graduate education in cardiovascular physiology at the University of Iowa.  As a member of the Academy of General Dentistry, he is committed to continuing education, and has studied with dental greats like Dr. Frank Spear of the Seattle Institute for Advanced Dental Education, and Dr. Peter Dawson of the Dawson Center for the Advancement of Dentistry.  He remains an active member of the American Dental Association, the Iowa Dental Association and the Des Moines District Dental Society and has served on the Peer Review Committee for the Board of Dental Examiners. He has also served as an instructor in the Dental Hygiene Department at Des Moines Area Community College.

Born and raised in Mason City, Iowa, Dr. Merfeld has lived in the Urbandale area for the past 26 years. He served 10 years on the Urbandale Planning and Zoning Commission and 10 years as a fire fighter/paramedic for the Urbandale Fire Department.  In his spare time he enjoys his passion for flying.  He holds both a commercial and instrument pilot license and will soon have his flight instructor rating.  Many weekends he can be found flying skydivers out of Winterset.   He and his wife Toni live in Clive.
